When we first checked in the new series of TomTom navigation devices – the TomTom Go 930 Traffic, we were pleased with the new features, but not impressed by his wincingly high price.

This top-of-the-range Navigator Bluetooth remote control and card mentioned by almost the entire civilized world – or at least the parts of the public, unpaved roads. But it cost eye-watering 311 (excl VAT) and as most people have no use for detailed street maps of Manicougan or Nizhny Novgorod, we could not really recommend.

The TomTom Go 730 raises the expensive, unnecessary extras and is thus in a much lower price: the non-TMC version is 213 (excl VAT) and the version with TMC traffic information for only 11 more traffic available. The good news is that, apart from these differences and a slightly different color scheme, the Go 730 is, for all intents and purposes, an identical product.

That is, it has the important function of IQ Routes, TomTom’s information from its users about the average speed of traffic that uses them in order to plan effectively, hopefully, used car-free routes together. This leads to more accurate estimates than before ETA, and in tests we have run out, sensible route selection than the majority of PND we tested.

In a frequently traveled route through central London from South Woodford in north-east to Wimbledon Park in the southwest, for example, selected a route that is that we had as regards the optimal route. Instead of routing us on the A11, from Bethnal Green, he suggested a route that took in the A13 and Rotherhithe tunnel, instead – a segment that creep usually much less prone to jam.

Lane assist is as good as it is with the TomTom Go 930 with minor dual carriageways and covers the main A-roads and motorways. First satellite provision is incredibly fast, as expected, and fast route calculation, too. TomTom Map Share feature is available so that your map corrections to TomTom server upload and download those of other people.

And there are the usual plethora of features, from text to speech, that street names read to you (rather than just to say you simply “turn left”) to have with good hands-free Bluetooth phone with voice recognition that works, a FM transmitter for piping tunes from the onboard music player through your car radio.

All in all, it’s a different Belter a GPS by TomTom. It’s still a little on the expensive side, but the cost is much easier to swallow than the 300-plus-day of the Go 930 Traffic. This is a worthy successor to the equally excellent GO 720.
