7 Oct 2010As small cars go, the Canon S90 was one of the best we tested at the back end of 2009. The only thing missing, however, would take it to the top of our cameras have Christmas lists, was the video functionality.
Thankfully, its successor, the Canon S95 corrects this with the inclusion of 720p HD recording.
Those that S90 will know that it is trying to have a compact that will bad a DSLR. The S95 is no different.
Things like the lens ring (which was extended) will offer full manual control over your shots. Flick it around and you can use ISO, the speed of the shutter, and focus on what you tweak compensation opening.
It’s fair to say, if you are a professional looking for a smaller second camera, the S95 would be more than your needs.
Manual control also seeps into the back of the camera. The multi-wheel (which has been made stiff by consumer feedback) allows grows more manual, including semi-automatic shutter and aperture priority.

For the less experienced photographers than the S95 yet to use a joy. There are enough preset modes to find the right one for your needs shooting.
And there are plenty of “intelligence” into the camera to the Turing test are: including Smart-Detection technology and an optical image stabilizer counteracts the camera shake.
Although we tested the camera in a bright room, Canon assured us that the S95 in the foreground when shooting is in low light.
This is because, Canon has managed to squeeze in a F2.0 aperture in the chassis. Couple this with the 10 megapixel CCD sensor and DIGIC 4 processor and it sounds as if the S95 brings lots of light into the dark side.
If, as the S95 feels in the hands going, there’s certainly more grip on the camera compared to the S90. A matte finish ensures that the camera does not slip out of hand – that’s a good thing as Canon decided to add access to the chassis with no contours for the fingers.
The mode dial on the back is certainly a lot stiffer, although we must admit that the original was on the S90 never actually us many problems. The LCD on the neck of the S95 is similar to what is found on the IXUS 1000 HS – it is 3-inches tall and seems bright enough for everyday use.

During the 3.8-times optical zoom could do with upping that the S95 shoots raw materials shows that this is a camera for imaging enthusiasts, not necessarily maintain the “Super Zoom” is. The final flourishes for the S95, the addition of hybrid technology on the camera – the first for a compact.
Pop the S95 on a tripod and this technology is three images (normal, one under and one overexposed) and mash together to create a “perfect image”. Impressive. Most impressive. The Canon PowerShot S95 is on sale from August 2010 and is priced at $ 399.
